Jamie,
I love the post. It's amazing what happens when you start into action and course correct as you go. It's always easier to change the course when the plane is in the air instead of working on how to get it on the perfect course while on the ground.

Also I love the quote: "Rewarding firefighting is often rewarding behaviors that start the fires in the first place. I call this “rewarding the arsonist.”" It really annoys me when the people who prevent disaster are just overlooked when a person who fire fights is the hero.

Great post Jamie. This is a good follow on to something i talked about recently on Stop Fire Fighting (http://leanjourneytruenorth.blogspot.com/2009/07/stop-fighting-fires.html). We need to make sure we don't reward fire fighting behaviour and that we create this culture of problem solving using the steps you outline.

Thanks Dan.

Sometimes all you need is a trigger and push to start heading in the right direction.

Great advice, Jamie. I think sometimes it's hard for people to put aside the adrenaline rush of fire fighting for the less dramatic process you outline. But this is the real way towards improvement.
